Gemstone ​Class of 2021 Team

Mission Statement

Electric Vehicles (EV)s can be charged wirelessly through a method known as Wireless Power Transfer (WPT).  Currently, this method requires the vehicle to be stationary over the charging source.  However, it is theorized that if this technology is expanded, vehicles could be charged while in motion.  This is known as dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT).  This would be accomplished by creating an electromagnetic connection between the vehicle and the road.  To do this, coils in the road and on a moving EV would be used to induce a current between the two.  Many variables exist and a complex model is needed to aide in the optimization of charge gained at a set speed.  The goal of Team FORMULA is to develop such a model and conduct physical tests which will be compared with simulation data.

THE RESEARCH QUESTION

1. How can the dynamic charging of EVs be successfully implemented into a roadway?  
2. Would dynamic charging be able to provide enough power to a vehicle to make a difference in its overall range capability? 
3. Is dynamic charging a safe and reliable means of transmitting power to a vehicle in motion on the roadway, and would it affect a vehicle’s performance in other ways?

Would a traditional roadway be able to accommodate dynamic charging, or would more nontraditional infrastructure need to be created

The Research Problem

Electric Vehicles (EVs), while environmentally friendly, are not always convenient nor ideal to operate. Constantly requiring stops for charging and lengthy charging times have proven to be bothersome for EV owners. Improved charging methods are necessary if we expect EVs to gain traction in the market as the primary means of transportation among consumers anytime soon. A proposed solution to this research problem is DWPT.
